There are so many good music websites that I am going to split the articles over two months. In this first article I will write about how to manage your music on your computer and the best places to buy music. Next month I will write about websites that can recommend new music to you.
The first thing to do is to download iTunes for free. This is easily the best music library software available and works on both Windows and Apple computers. You can import your CD’s so that you can listen to them on your computer or synchronise them with your iPod or other MP3 player.
You can also buy music, videos, TV programmes, movies and listen to podcasts via iTunes. All purchases are downloaded to your iTunes library.
There are now some good alternatives to iTunes for buying music. eMusic is a subscription service. You pay from £10.99 per month and you get 40 downloads. This works out at only 27p per song (compared to 79p per song on iTunes). They do not offer many of the big releases. However, it is a superb website for independent music, discovering new music and rediscovering old favourites. It also has the added benefit of being DRM (Digital Rights Management) free. This means that once you purchase a song you can copy it as many times as you want and put it on as many devices as you like. 7 Digital is also worth investigating.
Napster is now a legal download website and offers unlimited access to its music library for £9.95 per month. The difference to iTunes, eMusic and 7 Digital is that you never own the music. Once you end your subscription, you no longer have access to the songs. Also, Napster is only compatible with Windows.
If MP3’s are not for you then you can still buy CD’s online; often cheaper than on the high street. The best places to go are Amazon, Play and CD Wow.
Buying concert tickets online is also very easy. I use See Tickets.
As always, you can find links to all of these websites at www.del.ico.us/gudgeon
